We shouldn't be at all surprised to see Miliband approaching things this way - especially in the context of the recent Mayo/Steinberg report which called on departments to use existing third-party networks, rather than trying to build their own. Besides, I don't think diplomacy is ready for a blogging Foreign Secretary; and Avaaz.org is a safe partner for a supposed Blairite, given its links back to MoveOn.org.

Yes, the digg/delicious/reddit buttons are a new addition, but so far they haven't been too effective: only two individuals seem to have used them, and I suspect they're both FCO staffers.

I've met with the FCO web team in the recent past; unless they were bluffing, I don't think they had particular plans for something like this. But then again, I don't think they were expecting to get Miliband in the reshuffle.

Thanks, Simon. The US State Department seems to be pulling ahead in some respects, doesn't it?
