Government barcamp postscript

Well, I thought it was a good day - but I’m biased. I was reluctant to push a results-oriented agenda, but I think there were constructive and informative elements to be found throughout the day.

There were 45-odd people at the Code Factory for the opening, and nearly 30 left when we closed up eight hours later. Jeremy Gould helped us open up the session with a lively and engaging webchat, and there were two entertaining presentations on selling and implementing video contests and wikis in a government context.

My primary goal was to get the dozens of government types interested in Web 2.0 applications to begin speaking to each other, and I think this session accomplished that goal. In fact, there were three or four points during the day when a more orderly person would have shut down the individual conversations and driven the group into a more defined workflow.

At the end of the day, there were several ideas and tasks left on the flipchart. We will try to address these on the Google Groups page, and I have committed to continuing these meetings, albeit in a smaller format, by organizing monthly meetings in the smaller space available at the Code Factory.

I want to thank all those public servants for taking time out of their schedule - including some who took vacation time - to attend and contribute. I hope it was as enjoyable and profitable for you as for me.

It was a great event, at least the couple of hours I saw.

    Thanks for organizing, Colin

It was very useful, thanks Colin. I learned a lot, got a chance to have a good look at some impressive initiative, meet the people behind them and (ahem…) do some recruiting.

We’ve got two social media projects at the conceptual stage here at OCOL. I’ll be happy to share information with the group when it become spossible.
